A chemical damp-proof course is injected, the affected plaster is hacked off to at least 300mm above the damp line, and the wall is re-rendered with a salt-retardant mix. It is disruptive and it is not cheap per metre, but it is done once.

The second thing worth knowing in Goodwood is that solid walls need to breathe. An impermeable, sealed coating on a solid brick wall traps moisture inside the masonry and pushes the film off from behind. Breathability matters more here than it does on a modern cavity-wall house.

• Newly rendered areas: a full plaster primer plus curing time. New render is highly alkaline and will burn through a topcoat applied too soon
• Corrugated iron roofs: rust cut back mechanically, a zinc-phosphate or etch primer depending on whether it is bare steel or galvanised, then a flexible roof coating. Skipping the primer is why roof paint peels in strips
• Interior on a budget: a decent mid-range acrylic like Plascon Polvin is a reasonable choice on low-traffic bedroom walls. Spend the difference on passages, the kitchen and the bathroom instead
• Bathrooms: a mould-resistant coating, and check the extractor actually works. Repainting a bathroom without fixing the ventilation is a yearly expense
